About the Society
The present
Lichfield Operatic Society began in 1942, although as long ago as 1896 a Lichfield Amateur
Operatic Society, with a very successful record of productions, existed until 1912 when
the loss of a suitable venue brought it to an untimely end.
The
first production of the present Society was 'Merrie England' in
1943, since when we have performed 98 shows up to December 2003.
On 9th
November 1943 the Society joined NODA.
Since 1974
productions have taken place at Lichfield Civic Hall. However this venue closed down in
June 2001 for a major reconstruction, soon after we had performed '42nd Street.' and
building work started on 21st January 2002.
All
productions will now be performed at the LichfieldGarrick,
which opened in July 2003 after two years of building work. We would
like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone at the Friary School
Theatre, Eastern Avenue, Lichfield for looking after us during our
stay there. Complete with recently refurbished raked seating, this
proved to be an excellent alternative venue.
We welcome
new members to either perform on stage (singing, dancing and acting) or help backstage
during a production. On Monday evenings we rehearse at The Martin Heath Hall, Christ
Church Lane, Lichfield from 7.30pm and principals rehearse also on Thursday evenings at
Rocklands School, Wissage Road, Lichfield.
We have
acquired a first class reputation over the years for achieving a professional standard.
