42nd Street
2nd to 7th April 2001

An amateur enterprise by arrangement with Musicscope and Stage Musicals of New York.
Music: Harry Warren. Lyrics: Al Dubin. Book: Michael Stewart & Mark Bramble

THE 42nd STREET LEGEND began as a novel and then a film in 1933. The musical version opened on Broadway in 1980 and in London four years later, where it ran for four and a half years before going out on a national tour, returning to London for a further season in 1991. It is based on the oldest cliché in showbusiness: the young girl from the chorus line who gets her big chance. A show within a show, the plot is carried along by characters with vested interests.Julian Marsh, the once great director trying to make a come-back with a Broadway hit.

Dorothy Brock, the ageing star who wants to stay in the limelight.
Billy Lawlor, the eternal juvenile lead.
Abner Dillon, the sugar-daddy who backs the show and expects favours.
Maggie Jones and Bert Barry, the songwriters hoping for success.
Pat Denning, the old vauderville partner and lover of Dorothy Brock.
Peggy Sawyer, the chorus girl who grabs her big chance when she is told "You're going out there a youngster, but you've got to come back a star!"
